Year One

 WELCOME TO YEAR 1 

 

My name is Mr Dawson. I am so excited to meet you all in September!

 

All about Mr Dawson:

 

My favourite colour is green.

My favourite animals are flamingos and sausage dogs.

My favourite food is pasta. Yummy!

My favourite subjects are Maths and Art.

 

What will we be doing in Year 1?

 

In September, our Curriculum Vehicle will be... 

 

Dazzling Designers!

 

At the end of the Autumn Term, we will be having our very own Arts & Crafts Fair!

 

Here's a little info about what we'll be doing:

 

 

ART & DESIGN

 

We will learn about the artist Piet Mondrian. We will explore line, shape and colour in lots of ways. We will focus on primary colours and mix secondary colours.

 

Then we will learn about Tingatinga - a style of art that comes from Africa! We'll develop our mixing and painting techniques to create our own fab art. We will display this at our Arts & Crafts Fair.

 

 

 

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

 

We will learn about Josiah Wedgwood - a famous Staffordshire potter. We will look carefully at a range of pots he made.

 

We will practise using different tools and materials before making our own pottery for the Arts & Crafts Fair.

 

COMPUTING

 

This term, our focus on Purple Mash will be Online Safety.

 

We will also technology to photograph our crafts, record our work. We will even make digital art and posters for our Arts & Crafts Fair.

 

MUSIC

 

This term, we will start to use the Charanga scheme of music. We will practise lots of fab rhymes and chants!

 

We will also explore African music to accompany our Tingatinga art. We will even create our own percussion instruments and play them to practise our performance skills!

 

 

GEOGRAPHY

 

This term, we will develop our map skills. We will use a bird's eye view and keys to make maps of our classroom, school and local area.

 

We will explore different physical and human features of Leek, focussing on where craftspeople and artists work.

 

HISTORY

 

This term, we will focus on the history of pottery in Staffordshire.

 

We will learn about the potter Josiah Wedgwood and why he is important.

 

We will find out how Staffordshire has changed over the years. We will also discover what life was like for children in Josiah Wedgwood's lifetime!

 

PSHE

 

Our focus this term will be Living in the Wider World.

 

We will find out about different jobs that people do, including artists and craftspeople.

 

We will also explore how we can take care of our planet by being responsible craftspeople and using recycled materials.

 

SCIENCE

 

Our focus this term will be Magnificent Materials! We will test which materials are best to use for different jobs, including for our different crafts.

 

We will also focus on the changing seasons throughout the year. We will start by learning about autumn.
